MACAO, July 16 (Xinhua/Guo Xin)--A forum based on the theme "machine translation, artificial intelligence and smart cities in the era of big data" and hosted by the Macao Polytechnic Institute was held online on July 16. The proceedings were highlighted by in-depth discussions in regard to the results of advanced research and the use of technology to assist in the construction and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the "Belt and Road."

The forum--in which the Language Big Data Alliance, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and School of Professional and Continuing Education of Hong Kong University were participants--had keynote speakers from Beijing, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. They shared their views on innovative technology as a means to propel the construction of a "China-Portugal platform" and a "Smart Bay Area."

The keynote speakers were Ding Tian, deputy secretary-general of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation Between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Macao); Elena Zhang, vice president of Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd.; Lu Zhaoxing, executive associate dean at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education; Ke Xiaohua, director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; Xiong Zhang, director of the Engineering Center of Ministry of Education for Advanced Computer Application Technology at Beihang University; and Associate Professor Luo Wuman, from the School of Applied Sciences at Macao Polytechnic Institute.

Ms. Zhang said that the construction of an international smart city has become the common choice of countries and regions along the Belt and Road. She also said the combination of language technology and urban planning, construction, management and service will help ensure the internationalization and intelligence of cities.

Lu Zhaoxing said the Greater Bay Area was closely related to the development of big data, which could facilitate socioeconomic integration of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and dramatically contribute to its development.

Xiong Zhang pointed out that developing the Internet of Things and smart cities is important as the means to enhance national competitiveness and the capacity for urban governance. It could also promote industrial transformation, upgrading and structural adjustment, and thus is an important arena for the new generation of independent innovations in information technology.

Translators from various government agencies and departments in Macao participated in the forum along with scholars, researchers and practitioners from universities, banks and enterprises.
